The Lucerne Theatre is the oldest producing multi-discipline theatre in Central Switzerland and thus one of the largest cultural providers.
Performances in opera, drama and dance as well as children's and youth theatre are staged in the Haus an der Reuss, but also in the Box and, since the 21/22 season, again in the UG. Culture for Lucerne!
Without the supporting programme, Lucerne Theatre puts on over 350 performances per season. These are attended by around 100,000 spectators every year, two thirds of whom come from the canton of Lucerne. Since the 21/22 season, the Lucerne Theatre has been under the direction of Ina Karr.
The Lucerne Theatre opened in autumn 1839 with Schiller's ‘William Tell’ and now has 481 seats.
The Lucerne Theatre employs almost 400 people each season. Half of these are employed in the artistic field (including artistic direction, ensemble, choir, dramaturgy) and half in the technical/administrative field (including workshops, stage technology, lighting, sound, props, make-up, costume department, administration, ticket office, marketing).
