The name ‘Komische Oper’ refers to the tradition of the French Opéra comique and its claim to modern music theatre.
The Komische Oper Berlin stands for contemporary and lively music theatre. Since its foundation, the Komische Oper Berlin has been the house where both parts of the word music theatre are written with equal emphasis. Founded 75 years ago as a “Volksoper”, it continues to be an opera house for everyone through a diverse range of programs — from opera to musicals, operettas, concerts and children’s operas — as well as through a comprehensive outreach program that aims to reach as many members of the public as possible from all population groups.
