Glyndebourne was founded by John Christie in 1934. It has, over the last 70 years, developed into an internationally renowned three-month season of six repertoire operas staged in a world class, purpose built theatre. Glyndebourne also supports a Touring Company, founded in 1968, which takes both new and revived productions to theatres throughout the UK (and sometimes abroad). The education department, founded in 1986, is one of the most energetic and innovative and is dedicated solely to the understanding and appreciation of opera. The basic philosophy of the company is to produce world-class opera during the Festival, the income from this allows the company to remain financially independent and also sustains the Touring Company. The Touring company is integral to the Glyndebourne vision as it enables us to make opera more accessible to audiences around the country and also provides an important performance opportunity for the nurturing of young operatic talent.
