The Staatstheater Braunschweig can look back on over 300 years of history. As early as 1690, Duke Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig-Lüneburg opened the theatre on Hagenmarkt, one of the first publicly accessible theatres in the German-speaking world. Initially it was purely an opera theatre, but from the middle of the 18th century onwards, plays were also performed regularly. Among the most important are the two premieres of ‘Emilia Galotti’ by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in 1772 and ‘Faust - der Tragödie erster Teil’ by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1829.
