The Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, under the direction of Josef E. Köpplinger since 2012, is a house with a unique profile and a tradition spanning over 150 years. It is one of the leading houses in the field of musical entertainment theater with the genres of opera, operetta, musicals and ballet. The Gärtnerplatztheater is the only state theater in Germany that focuses on this repertoire primarily.
The approximately 500 employees also include the members of the three permanent ensembles consisting of an orchestra, choir and ballet. The Junge Gärtnerplatztheater is also a solid pillar.
From 2012 to 2017, the 843-seat theater in downtown Munich was completely renovated and expanded in order to meet the growing demands of current and future theater work. The beautiful theater building from 1865 now shines again in its full splendor and offers the setting for show experiences at the highest level.
The musical entertainment theater with all its facets is at the center of the Gärtnerplatztheater's schedule. Whether classics of the repertoire, rediscoveries or premieres, in pieces such as „Three Men in the Snow", „My Fair Lady", „Rigoletto", „Tosca", „The Magic Flute", „Tschitti Tschitti Bang Bang", „The Tales of Hoffmann", „Giselle", „Monty Python’s NOT THE MESSIAH" or „Tootsie" visitors experience the fantastic musical diversity from opera to musical to operetta and Ballet.
