With the opening of the Capital Operetta Theater (Fővárosi Operettszínház), the era of the "silver operetta" began in the Hungarian capital - the genre found its new and permanent home, after the Folk Theatre (Népszínház) and King Theatre (Király Színház). Throughout its history, the theatre's main focus was on nurturing the traditions of classical operetta and enriching them with modern artistic solutions. Budapest, much like Vienna, is known as the capital of operetta, where the genre is celebrated with a combination of tradition and innovation.
The institution showcases Hungarian operettas and their modern successors, contemporary Hungarian musicals, as well as several literary and historical-based musicals tailored for younger audiences. It performs approximately 500 shows per year, for nearly 400,000 viewers, making it one of the most visited theatres in Hungary.
The troupe regularly tours abroad, performing operettas, musical productions and galas in numerous countries across Europe and Asia. In the autumn of 2011, the Budapest Operetta Theatre won the exclusive performance rights for all German-speaking areas to "Beauty and the Beast", a musical based on one of the world's most beautiful fairy tales, in a tight international competition. The institution, which has been recognized by Superbrands and MagyarBrands, also regularly organizes prestigious international music competitions.
