Preserving our planet is the most important challenge of our century and Opera Europa is committed to adapting its working habits to build a more sustainable future.
Opera Europa is part of the SHIFT initiative, a certification established with 15 international cultural networks in partnership with two environmental specialists, Creative Carbon Scotland and Green Leisure Group, which is providing a scheme to improve, measure, monitor and evaluate efforts toward sustainability.
Have a look at our Green Policy clicking in the right sidebar of this page.
Opera Europa actively supports the opera ecosystem in its transition toward a more sustainable future through a range of initiatives:
- The Sustainability Forum, established in 2022, convenes both online and in person to explore the cross-cutting theme of sustainability. It provides a platform for opera houses to share best practices and address the challenges of this evolving issue.
- Sustainability is now a central topic in nearly all Opera Europa forums and major conferences, encouraging companies across the sector to take meaningful action.
- In September 2025, Opera Europa launched a collaboration with the Theatre Green Book and Fedora, engaging 15 opera houses across Europe. The goal is to implement the Theatre Green Book guidelines and develop a tailored version for the opera and dance sectors. This collective effort aims to benefit the entire industry.
