Hyogo Performing Arts Center (HPAC) is a major cultural institution located in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Opened in 2005, ten years after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the center was conceived as part of the region’s cultural and community revitalization efforts. Designed as a hub for artistic exchange and public engagement, HPAC presents a broad range of performances including opera, ballet, theater, orchestral concerts, chamber music, jazz, and traditional performing arts. The center features three dedicated venues — the 2,001-seat Grand Hall, the 800-seat Theater, and the 417-seat Recital Hall — allowing it to host productions of varying scale and format.
A central component of the institution is the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra (HPAC Orchestra), established alongside the center under the artistic direction of conductor Yutaka Sado. The orchestra combines the functions of a professional ensemble and an international training academy, bringing together young musicians from Japan and abroad through competitive auditions. During their residency, members participate in orchestral, chamber music, opera, and outreach activities while working with internationally recognized conductors, soloists, and coaches.
In addition to its performance program, HPAC places strong emphasis on accessibility, education, and community engagement. The center regularly organizes outreach concerts, workshops, lectures, backstage tours, and low-cost performances aimed at broadening participation in the performing arts. Its facilities also incorporate environmental initiatives such as rooftop gardens, solar panels, and rainwater reuse systems. Through its artistic programming and educational activities, HPAC has established itself as one of Japan’s leading performing arts centers and an important platform for cultural exchange both nationally and internationally.
