The Semperoper Dresden is synonymous with artistic excellence, ideal architectural conditions, and a vibrant tradition. The Semperoper is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, unobstructed views and intimate setting, making every performance feel like a Premiere.
Its history stretches back over 350 years to Heinrich Schütz’s Dafne from 1627, the first German opera. A unique success story began with the establishment of the “German Opera Department” by Carl Maria von Weber in 1817 and the opening of the first Semper building in 1841, shaped by renowned composers and conductors such as Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, whose works achieved worldwide fame here in Dresden.
Today, under the artistic direction of Nora Schmid, the Saxon State Opera combines its rich past with contemporary creativity. Over 800 people work at the Semperoper, presenting more than 330 performances per season.
